When did KU go to the Final Four?
The Kansas men’s basketball team advanced to its 16th Final Four in school history with its victory over Miami on Sunday. This places Kansas in fifth place on the list of most Final Four trips in NCAA history, after North Carolina, Kentucky, UCLA, and Duke.
It is also Bill Self’s fourth time leading the Jayhawks to the Final Four (2008, 2012, 2018, 2022), matching him with Roy Williams (1991, 1993, 2002, and 2003) for the most visits by a KU coach in the tournament. Phog Allen achieved this feat three times (1940, 1952, and 1953), Ted Owens and Larry Brown both achieved this feat twice (1971 and 1974), and Dick Harp achieved this feat once (1957).
The men’s Final Four is being held in New Orleans for the sixth time (1982, 1987, 1993, 2003, 2012, and this year), and the Kansas Jayhawks will have competed in each of the previous four tournaments that have been held at the Superdome. There, Kansas University played in the championship game in 2003 and 2012 but fell short in the semifinals in 1993.
- In addition, the Kansas Jayhawks will compete against the Villanova Wildcats in the national semifinals for a spot in their second straight Final Four.
- In 2018, Kansas University was defeated by the Wildcats in San Antonio, the same city in which the Jayhawks won the third and last of their three NCAA titles in 2008.
The Final Four semifinal game on Saturday will get started at 5:09 p.m. Central Time, and TBS will be broadcasting the game nationally.
