There is no 1950 winner. Since Miss America reigns for a year following her September victory, and most of that year falls into the next calendar year, in 1950, pageant officials decided to call the winner “Miss America 1951,” and have followed this practice ever since. | ||||||

What state hasn’t won Miss America?
Congratulations to Kira Kazantsev, who was crowned Miss America 2015 after winning the title of Miss New York. This is the third consecutive triumph for New York’s entry into the competition (and we think it’s the first time a plastic cup has been used to win), which surely shows that New Yorkers are the most well-rounded, beautiful, and friendly people in all of America.
However, are they?* Let’s have a look at the facts, shall we? Since the beginning of both pageants, New York has produced ten women who have gone on to win the title of Miss America or Miss USA. That puts it in third place, only behind the states of California and Texas. (As you can see on the map below, darker colors indicate a greater number of wins.) Several states, including Alaska, West Virginia, Montana, Maine, and the Dakotas, have never produced a single winner in any of their state lotteries.
There is an apparent explanation for that, which we will discuss again later. During the question-and-answer portion of the competition, contestants in any Miss America pageant will tell you that winning isn’t everything. And even the states that have never taken first place have at least finished in the top three.
- We obtained information on the runners-up in the Miss America pageant for the past 30 years as well as the complete list of runners-up in the Miss USA pageant from Wikipedia (which, for this kind of data, seems like a reliable source).
- You can examine how different parts of the country compare to one another by using the tabs in the box below.
For instance, the South has a stronger record in Miss USA pageants. Again, California came out on top, and this time Texas was in second place. But after that things start getting interesting. The state of Alabama is currently in third place (many thanks to Miss USA!) South Carolina and Oklahoma also do quite well.
- Now we will return to the point that was made before.
- Why hasn’t anyone from Montana or Alaska ever earned the title of Miss America? Because Alaska and Montana are home to an extremely negligible population, respectively.
- On the other hand, the states of Texas, California, and New York each contain millions of residents out of which contestants who are well suited to win beauty pageants can be selected (and, we presume, better farm systems of pageantry).
Therefore, we computed the total number of winners as a function of the state’s entire population. And, voila: It does not appear here, but Washington, District of Columbia, which has a relatively low population but a high number of cities that made the cut, is the clear winner (including the first Miss America).
- The state of Hawaii comes in second, which is most likely going to be a huge surprise to everyone.
- Then there are other states that are fascinating, such as Oklahoma and Alabama, as well as North Dakota, which has such a low population that its three finalists have a significant impact on the election.
However. There are two other aspects that warrant our attention and study. The first thing to note is that being in fourth place at Miss America is in no way comparable to winning Miss America. And the second point is that being crowned Miss America is not the same as being crowned Miss USA.
- We will be the first to admit that we do not have sufficient knowledge regarding the differences that exist between the two pageants.
- In fact, we only vaguely comprehend, thanks to the hazy atmosphere of information that we’ve been immersed in for the entirety of our lives, that the latter competition is regarded as being in some way less prestigious.
(Distinguished!) However, this image is strengthened by the fact that it is owned by Donald Trump, who is a master at putting a low-cost veneer over tackiness. This perception is bolstered by the fact that it is owned by Donald Trump. Therefore, we have given the winner of Miss America a score of 12, compared to Miss USA’s score of 7, and then we have weighted each of the other finalists correspondingly downward to bring their total score down.
- The order would therefore be: Illinois, Oklahoma, and Ohio, followed by California, Texas, and New York.
- The states that are the most American in spirit.
- But in order to really understand this, we need to view it through the prism of population.
- This results in a new group of people taking first place.
According to the results of our unsponsored meta-competition, the most “American” states in the United States are Washington, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Mississippi when population is taken into account. There was a three-way tie for last place between South Dakota, Montana, and Delaware.
