Cindy Steinhardt, his wife, stated that he passed away on Saturday at a hospital in the city of Tampa, Florida. She made the announcement on her Facebook page on Monday saying he had recently finished recording his debut solo album and that he was eagerly anticipating returning to the stage and heading on tour.
Steinhardt, who was born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, was an original member of the band. He joined forces with Kerry Livgren, Rich Williams, Phil Ehart, and Dave Hope, all of whom had graduated from Topeka West High School, as well as with Steve Walsh, who was born and raised in St.

On May 13, the musician was sent to Tampa General hospital for treatment of severe pancreatitis; he had been there since May 13. He never quite got back to normal. A fever started to develop in him on the day when he was supposed to be transferred to a rehabilitation clinic. Even though Steinhardt was able to say goodbye to his wife and children, he passed just a few minutes after.
The band was formed in 1973 and is originally from Topeka, Kansas. They caught a break when they signed a recording contract with Don Kirshner’s record label, Kirshner, right around the time that his television show, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, debuted and became quite popular with rock fans.
The band’s members are singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarists Kerry Livgren and Rich Williams, violinist Steinhardt, bassist Dave Hope, and drummer Phil Ehart Steinhardt left the band in 1982 after their tremendous success, but he came back in 1997 and stayed for over a decade after his comeback.
Cindy Steinhardt noted in the Facebook post in which she announced the passing of her husband that he had recently finished recording his debut solo album with producer Michael Franklin, and that he had intended to launch a tour in the month of August.

He and Walsh, Kansas’ other lead vocalist from their core, early lineup, were the only two members of the band who were not born in Topeka. Both sang lead vocals for the band. This album featured “Carry On Wayward Son,” which became a #11 mainstream success in the United States with Walsh performing lead vocals.
