On January 11, 1970, the fourth annual AFL-NFL Championship Game was played in Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. Today, this game is officially known as the “Super Bowl,” and it has been played there since 1970. The AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs won their matchup against the NFL champion Minnesota Vikings by a score of 23–7.
Did the Chiefs ever win the Super Bowl?
It’s probably not news to anyone who hasn’t spent the last year in a cave, but it’s pretty well known that the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl two years ago. Oh, and there is a lot that we need to get you up to speed on. The victory of the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54, which took place in February of 2020, was a momentous occasion.
They had participated in two previous Super Bowls, the most recent of which resulted in a victory in the year 1970. This meant that it had been a record-setting fifty years since the Kansas City club had last won the Super Bowl. The Chiefs finished the regular season with a record of 12-5, good enough for the second seed in the American Football Conference (AFC), despite yet another dominant performance by Patrick Mahomes.
As a result of the Bengals’ victory against the Titans and the chiefs’ victory over the bills, Kansas City has once again strengthened its position to host each round of the playoffs on its way to winning the Lombardi Trophy. If the Chiefs are able to pull off a victory over Cincinnati on Sunday, they will go to their third consecutive Super Bowl.

What year did the Kansas City Chiefs win the AFL Championship?
AFL Champions (1962, 1966, and 1969) The Texans cruised to an 11–3 record in their third season, earning them a spot in the team’s inaugural American Football League Championship Game, which they played against the Houston Oilers. The Texans went on to win the title three times, in 1962, 1966, and 1969.
The Texans prevailed against the Oilers 20–17 in double overtime to take the game, which was shown on ABC and aired nationally. The game lasted 77 minutes and 54 seconds, which to this day remains the record for the longest championship game in the history of professional football. It turned out to be the team’s final game under the name Dallas Texans, which they had used since 1993.
Hunt came to the conclusion that the Dallas–Fort Worth media market was not large enough to support two professional football clubs. This was despite the fact that the Cowboys had spent their first three seasons compiling a record of just 9–28–3 during that span.
For the 1963 season, he gave serious consideration to relocating the Texans to either Atlanta or Miami. On the other hand, an offer made by Kansas City Mayor Harold Roe Bartle was enough to sway his decision in the end. Bartle made a commitment to increase the number of season tickets sold by the franchise by a factor of three and to increase the overall capacity of Municipal Stadium to accommodate the team.
On May 22, 1963, Hunt reached an agreement to move the franchise to Kansas City. One week later, on May 26, 1963, the team was officially christened the Kansas City Chiefs. The name “Chiefs” was chosen in honor of Mayor Bartle’s nickname, which he acquired in his professional role as Scout Executive of the St.
Joseph and Kansas City Boy Scout Councils, and founder of the Scouting Society, the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Originally, Hunt and head coach Hank Stram intended to keep the Texans name for the team, but the name was changed due to the results of a fan contest. Despite the past utilization of Native American elements, it has been shown that the team’s name does not make a direct reference to Native Americans but rather merely makes reference to Bartle’s nickname, “Chief.” Business Insider journalist Meredith Cash even stated in January 2020 that Bartle “insisted on the team being named after himself” and that “Bartle was known as Chief Lone Bear inside Mic-O-Say circles, and eventually the nickname “Chief” caught on among people around Kansas City” (3).
Because of the team’s supremacy, Lamar Hunt became a crucial role in the discussions with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to reach an agreement on a merger between the AFL and the NFL. During the talks that took place between the two leagues, it was decided that a combined league championship game would be played in January 1967, following the end of the seasons that were played by each league in 1966.
After observing his children having fun with a popular children’s toy at that era called a “Super Ball,” Hunt asked that the game be called the “Super Bowl.” The AFL–NFL World Championship Game was the name given to the first several editions of what would later be known as the Super Bowl. However, in subsequent years, the Super Bowl moniker became its legally recognized title.
In 1966, the Chiefs breezed to an 11–2–1 record and won the American Football League Championship Game by defeating the Buffalo Bills, who had won the AFL the previous year. In the first ever AFL vs. NFL World Championship Game, the Green Bay Packers, winners of the NFL’s league championship, will face the Kansas City Chiefs.
Green Bay came out on top with a victory over Kansas City by a score of 35–10, despite the fact that the first half of the game between the two teams was a competitive one with a tight score. The Chiefs were victorious, but their performance earned them the respect of several of the Packers’ opponents after the game.
The inter-league matchup that the Chiefs played against the Packers was not the last time that the Chiefs would play an opponent from the National Football League, especially on the championship stage. The next year, in August, Kansas City played host to the Chicago Bears of the NFL in the preseason game of 1967 and ended up winning 66–24.
