How did Finney County get its name?
History – Finney County was originally established in the year 1880 under the names Buffalo County and Sequoyah County. Sequoyah County was named after the Cherokee Indian who was instrumental in the creation of the Cherokee alphabet. The combined counties were given the new name of Finney County in honor of David Wesley Finney, who served as Lieutenant Governor at the time.
- The incorporation of Garfield County into the original county in 1893 resulted in the formation of the modern-day county.
- Separate from the rest of the territory that is rectangular, the block in the northeast indicates what was formerly Garfield County and is now inhabited in part by the Garfield Township.
Charles “Buffalo” Jones, who was also one of the original founders of Garden City, was the first person to represent Finney County in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was well-known for his work to prevent the extinction of the buffalo in the wild.
