When the Royals were playing their very first game at the old Municipal Stadium, they rallied from a 3-1 hole to triumph in extra innings against the Minnesota Twins, who would go on to win the Western Division Championship.
In its inaugural year, the team ended with a record of 69-93 overall. This was the greatest mark achieved by any of the four expansion clubs who made their debut in 1969. The Rookie of the Year award went to Lou Piniella, a rookie outfielder who is known for his fierce play on the field.
