The previous week, I came across an article that stated a comic book artist in Kansas by the name of Christopher Wietrick was attempting to campaign for his town to be renamed Smallville, citing various comparisons. The article stated that Christopher Wietrick was citing various similarities between his town and the fictional town of Smallville.

Naturally, I was interested in identifying the location of the town. I was somewhat aback to learn that it was Hutchinson, the town in which I had spent my childhood. My response to the possibility was a straightforward “No,” which might surprise you given the fact that I have been a Superman fan for as long as I can remember.

The arguments that Wietrick presented included the fact that both the fictional and the real towns had agricultural roots and that they had a food market and a renovated theater on the town’s main street.
What he neglected to mention was the fact that the city is considerably larger than a single street and is home to a Wal-Mart, a Dillon’s, and a McDonald’s restaurant, among other establishments.

To me, the television show Smallville personified the purity of traditional American ideals, much like a Norman Rockwell painting. To the best of my knowledge, I have never encountered a painting by Rockwell that portrayed major firms like Wal-Mart or McDonald’s.

When I took a moment to sit down and think about it, I too was able to think of additional examples of cities that I had traveled to throughout the years. Main Street Towns such as Buhler, Cunningham, and Nickerson were similar to Nickerson and Buhler in that they were encircled by agricultural land used for growing wheat and maize.

The town of Greensburg, which was really struck by a meteorite, is the one that stands out the most. This location has the potential to be described as the spot where the rocket ship landed, while the meteorite itself may be described as Kryptonite. Although I support the idea that our state ought to be better known for being Superman’s home state as opposed to the more commonplace references to Dorothy and Toto, I believe that a place like Hutchinson is too urbanized to be referred to as Smallville, whereas there are other towns that are more deserving of the name.

Whether it was the social connections I made in a vibrant Old Town, meeting my beautiful wife and her wonderful family, or the vast network of friends and acquaintances I’ve made through the Young Professionals of Wichita, it has been the people — specifically, their ability to do good — that have kept me here.

I have discovered that the character of Wichitans has contributed to the development of a community-wide feeling of pride.
Young people and countless other individuals, as well as people of all ages, appreciate them despite the fact that the list of every project, facility, and accomplishment is much too long to mention here.

Recent excursions that I took with the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce to our peer towns of Omaha and Tulsa left me awestruck by the immensely inclusive character of the community initiatives that were being undertaken in both communities.

Wichita ought to make doing this their number one priority. To maintain long-term economic viability, it is necessary to have a community that welcomes people of all backgrounds, encourages them to participate, and helps them feel at home in the group. The narrative of how Superman was created in Kansas is, at its heart, a story of inclusion.

The Kents were willing to accommodate a family member who was unlike to them in practically every conceivable aspect. We can all empathize with how it feels to occasionally struggle with feelings of isolation brought on by our unique characteristics. We are all the same because we experience that same feeling in the same way.

In a very literal sense, Kansas values served as the basis for one of the most motivational personalities created in the previous one hundred years.
